Swat river in high flood at Khyali

CHARSADDA: Heavy flooding in the Swat River sent a raging torrent to the Khyali region in Charsadda, however, the protective dikes built following the devastating floods of 2010 helped save the district from destruction.

In 2010, a torrent of flooding with 90,000 cusecs of water caused significant damage to growing crops and properties in Charsadda. However, the construction of the 134-kilometre protective dikes saved the area from flooding.

Now the flood torrent with 180,000 cusecs of water can pass through the Khyali region without causing flooding in the river.

An irrigation department official told this scribe that the Khyali link bridge was closed to traffic as a precaution, disrupting the flow of traffic on the Peshawar-Charsadda road. However, the highway was open to traffic. He added that the Swat River was in high flood in Bahrain, Madyan and Panjgora. The floods caused crop damage in the Tangi, Shabqadar and Charsadda watersheds, he said. An investigation was also commissioned to assess the damage.

Meanwhile, the district administration has been put on alert to deal with any predicament.

KHAR: Deputy Commissioner Bajaur Fayyaz Khan Sherpao has ordered all government departments to take precautionary measures to deal with any flood emergency in the district. "All government services must be prepared for any emergency created by a possible flood in order to minimize loss and damage to neighbourhood infrastructure," said a statement from the deputy commissioner. Government departments have been urged to remain vigilant and monitor the seasonal rivers and streams that flow through the district. The Department of Agriculture has been tasked with cleaning up seasonal streams and keeping in close contact with people to help them quickly in the event of a flood. The official asked the relevant departments to keep the relief supplies, which would be provided to the victims of the floods, on hand.
